Can you explain to us what is hallux valgus and what is esthetic orthopedics?

Updated: Jul 3, 2023

Hallux valgus is certainly the most common reason for patients to come in regarding their feet. It is a deformity that is more common in women. It indicates the position of the big toe which is directed towards the middle of the foot. In younger and middle age, it is a cosmetic deformity. Open toe shoes are a typical part of fashion in the warmer months. Women with this deformity avoid such shoes, and often find it difficult to find comfortable shoes. Various aids that supposedly correct the deformity are completely ineffective because they do not follow the rules of biomechanics. In middle and old age, the deformity can become painful.

The only effective treatment is surgery. After the review and detailed analysis of the X-ray images, the optimal one is selected for each patient from several different ones. Regardless of whether the reason for the operation is cosmetic or functional, we always take both elements into account. The patient immediately walks in a special postoperative shoe that has support only on the heel. Such operations are best performed in the colder months as preparation for the next summer season.

Esthetic orthopedics deals with the surgical treatment of visible deformities of bones and joints that, in principle, disrupt the symmetry and therefore the beauty of the body. Examples of this are X or O legs, lodge-healed fractures (at a certain angle), deformities of bones and joints present from birth, too short or too long fingers, deformities of the joints of the hands and feet.
